South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) – Should I Watch It?
Intro to… South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
A musical that will warp your fragile little mind.
Four fourth-graders from a quiet little redneck mountain town watch a Canadian movie that ends up heavily influencing their attitude and vocabulary. Concerned about the safety of their children, their moms unite to form a political party that wants to destroy Canada.
Should I Watch It?
In August 1997 the first episode of South Park premiered on TV after it went viral on the Internet. 19 seasons, consisting of over 267 episodes, followed. And somewhere along the lines a movie happened.
Fans did not have to wait long. A mere two years later and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut got announced. The world exploded from excitement, but there was one big question looming over everyone’s head: would it work as a movie?
See, South Park quickly transformed from a poorly animated series filled with crude language and a dark sense of humour, into a poorly animated series filled with crude language, a dark sense of humour, that delivered poignant and relevant social commentary. A lot of the jokes and gags were aimed at what was going on in the world. Much like it still does to this very day. But movies are different, their lifespan vastly exceed that of a TV episode. So how could they maintain that essential part of the show?
The answer is both simple and brilliant: address topics that have and will stay around for a long time: war, racism, love, freedom of speech, ignorance, blind sightedness, etc. Cynically delivered as a colourful and cheery sounding musical.
I love South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. The social commentary is universal, the script is hilarious, the songs are catchy, and all of it ties together intelligently. It might be coarse, dark, and disgusting at times, but it is my favourite musical, and one of my favourite animated movies, by far. I highly recommend it.
Yes, watch it.
