The Last Witch Hunter (2015) – Should I Watch It?
Intro to… The Last Witch Hunter
The bald and unintelligible Sherlock Holmes of Witchcraft is on the case when a man gets murdered in a magically unmagical way.
When Kaulder (Vin Diesel) strikes his blade into the evil Witch Queen, she casts one last curse to make him immortal. He uses his immortality to hunt witches, and he succeeds up to a point where a truce is made. They are allowed to live and practice their magic, but humans are not to be harmed.
Now, in our time, Kaulder functions as a policing authority that slams down the hammer when a witch breaks the treaty. So when Kaulder’s friend and confidant Dolan (Michael Cain) gets killed, and he finds out the killer used witchcraft to do so, he is extra motivated to bring in the culprit.
Should I Watch It?
The Last Witch Hunter is a fantasy adventure story featuring Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, and Elijah Wood. It is set in modern day New York and introduces a world where regular humans are unaware of the magical beings that surround them. So it is pretty much like almost every other movie made in this genre.
But what makes The Last Witch Hunter stand out? Well, it is not the acting or storytelling, I can tell you that. Not that it is particularly bad; the acting is fine in a mediocre to average kind of way, and the story is sort of decent and even has some cleverness to it. What did stood out to me, was the magic.
Wait, hold on, and stop. Magic? How can that stand out? We have seen that in countless movies. Big movies. Good movies. Successful movies. Well, here is the thing. When I think of magic, I think of a super powered force that has little to no limits to it. Whatever you can think of should be possible. And I feel most movies underplay this aspect. The Last Witch Hunter, however, has some neat scenes with creative magic. I think it deserves some recognition and a plus for that.
But this plus is not going to be enough for me to recommend it. Overall the movie is okay, but if someone were to ask me whether to watch it, I would probably tell him or her to see if there is something else they could watch. But if it happens to be raining, you have nothing to do, and this is the only thing available, then it is good enough to kill the time.
No, don’t watch it.
