Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) – Should I Watch It?

Intro to… Safety Not Guaranteed
When a writer finds out some weirdo thinks he can time travel, he decides that his weirdo intern is the best one to go in and get the scoop.

The Plot
Darius (Aubrey Plaza) is a disillusioned and pessimistic college student that interns at Seattle Magazine. One of the writers, Jeff (Jake Johnson), gets assigned to write a piece on a man that placed a newspaper ad that stated that he is looking for a partner to travel through time with. Jeff takes Darius and Arnau (Karan Soni), another intern, with him to investigate.

Should I Watch It?
Safety Not Guaranteed is a drama directed by Colin Trevorrow. You might be thinking: “Trevorrow, where have I heard that name before?” Well, that’s probably because he directed last year’s Jurassic World and has been confirmed to direct Star Wars IX, but before all that he shot this little film.

It is a small story about an investigative reporter and his team writing a fluff piece on a presumably estranged man. But the writing makes it so that you will soon be wondering whether this man really is as crazy as you first assumed. And it keeps you wondering until its final conclusion.

The story is light and fun, but every character is fleshed out. Even the seemingly shallow Jeff turns out to have an interesting and relatable personality consisting of multiple layers. Within its 86 minutes of runtime, it shows blossoming relationships, drama, a couple of subplots, and some surprising plot twists. And none of it feels rushed.

Nearly every main character stands out in this movie. Aubrey Plaza and Jake Johnson do a great job at playing Aubrey Plaza and Jake Johnson, which might sound cynical but is not meant as such. Mark Duplass plays his role quirky and out of touch, but also kind-hearted and lovable – which suits him perfectly. The only one not standing out is Karan Soni, but that has everything to do with his character being very timid and never appearing in the spotlight and nothing to do with his performance.

At this point in time Colin Trevorrow gets heralded for his massive success with Jurassic World, but Safety Not Guaranteed is in my opinion the better film by far. It is grounded, fun, and a joy to watch. I wholeheartedly recommend this movie.

Yes, watch it.
