The Godfather: Part II (1974) – Should I Watch It?
Intro to… The Godfather: Part II
Three and a half hours of Al Pacino death stare.
The Corleone family has flourished since Michael (Al Pacino) took over the position of Don. And it will thrive even more if his plans to expand their business to Cuba follow through.
Should I Watch It?
The Godfather: Part II is the second part of the Godfather trilogy, and functions both as a sequel and a prequel. It continues the story of Michael Corleone while also looking back at the life of Vito Corleone.
The story is much grander than the first one. It shows more of the Corleone family and their relationships with each other and their business contacts. This makes the movie bigger but less personal, and in a way this parallels the different approaches of how Vito and Michael handle their role as family Don. Vito was a much more relationship-focused, whereas Michael puts business first.
Robert De Niro absolutely kills it at as a young Vito Corleone, and I would have preferred it if the movie focused more on him and how he created the Corleone Family since to me those are the most interesting parts of the story. He flawlessly copies Marlon Brando’s habits and mannerisms, while also adding parts of himself to the Vito character.
Al Pacino reprises his role as Michael Corleone, now the Don of the Corleone family. His past misfortunes and current role as head of a criminal organisation have hardened him, and Pacino expresses this flawlessly. He looks absolutely intense. There is a dangerous fire in his eyes, all of his rage repressed so he can maintain a calm and collected persona, but as an audience member you are just waiting for him to explode.
The Godfather: Part II is a worthy sequel to its predecessor. Many consider this movie to be even better than The Godfather, but I personally do not agree with this. I do, however, think this is a great movie. And if you have seen the first one and liked it, then you should definitely give this one a shot. But who am I kidding? You were planning on doing that anyway!
Yes, watch it.
