Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Should I Watch It?

The Plot
After the evens of the original trilogy the Galactic Empire has done some rebranding and turned into the First Order. Different name, same objective. As before their actions are not unopposed, the Resistance still fights the good fight against their foul intentions.

Should I Watch It?
For over 32-years Star Wars fans have been waiting for this; the continuation of one of the most beloved trilogies ever put to film. And even better, it is going to be another trilogy. The first of which is Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Let’s start with answering the biggest question of all, even more important whether I think if it is any good. Does it feel like a true Star Wars film? In other words, is it the complete opposite of the prequels? I am delighted to be able to confirm this. The Force Awakens is an exciting space adventure through the imaginative and vibrant world that we all know and love.

The story moves at breakneck speed. If you are familiar with Abrams’ work on Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness then you will recognise the fast flow of the movie. Exposition gets provided through action and discovery, no flashbacks or long talks. It is the gift that keeps on giving.

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac are introduced as the new heroes of a galaxy far far away. The first two are our main characters, but all three stand out as promising actors. Their characters are instant fan favourites and cannot simply be described as the new Han, Luke, and Leia. Adam Driver plays the main antagonist, Kylo Ren. His appearance is much less intimidating than for instance Darth Vader or Darth Maul, but his character might be one of the most interesting within the Star Wars Universe.

The original cast also makes an appearance. Their roles within this new story make sense and are handled respectively. The chemistry between them has remained unchanged, and their interactions with the new members feel natural. Literally everyone plays his or her part seamlessly.

If I had to come up with things that were bad or could have been done better, the first thing that comes to mind would be that there are a lot of story progressing coincidences. Everything falls neatly into place. Another thing is that because the action is so non-stop and so little exposition is given, not much about what has happened these last 30 years gets told. Now, I think this is done so they can extrapolate this in the two upcoming movies, much like how it was done in the original Star Wars trilogy. So I was not bothered too much about this.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a great film for both fans and newcomers. It expands on its existing universe while also being accessible. The movie works both as a stand-alone, as part of a trilogy, and as part of a greater cinematic universe. It is not perfect, but all its imperfections can be forgiven by the introduction of great new characters, a strong sense of humour, and the delivery of a film that truly feels like a Star Wars movie.
