Blood Simple – Throwback Thursday
Intro to… Blood Simple
A Texan bar owner hires a fat man to deliver some street justice to his cheating wife and the hustler she is doing the dirty with, but things go south and he gets crossed off himself.
Julian Marty (Dan Hedaya) is not a kind man, but no one deserves to be cheated on. He tries to deal with it, but the images of his beautiful wife Abby (Frances McDormand) in the arms of his employee Ray (John Getz) drive him insane. Eventually he snaps and hires an assassin to kill them.
But the assassin double crosses him and shoots Julian with Abby’s gun. Ray finds both the body and the gun, which makes him believe that Abby shot Julian so they could be together.
Should I Watch It?
Blood Simple is a psychological crime thriller from the 80s, and was the directorial debut of the now well-known Coen brothers. It introduces us several characters whose storylines intertwine, the structure is very similar to movies such as Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
The story is intelligent, takes many different directions, and contains a couple of interesting plot twists. The acting is pretty good. Frances McDormand, Dan Hedaya, and Michael Emmet-Walsh all put in very good work. I felt John Getz was a bit less impressive, but decent nonetheless.
The movie does suffer from what almost every thriller suffers from: main characters that are unable to explain things in a normal fashion, and main characters that never call the police no matter what happens. A lot of confusion and frustration could have been spared if Ray just looked Abby straight in the eyes and said: “Listen babe, this is what happened. I walked into the bar and your husband was shot. I found your gun so I assumed it was you. I panicked, but all I could think of was protecting you. So I scrubbed the place down and buried the body.” But the script demands pronouns and vagueness so that drama can ensue. Since this happens in almost every movie I do not judge this harshly, but it does annoy me.
Overall, Blood Simple is an intricate and entertaining movie. The story surprises you at times and keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. I would definitely recommend this movie.
Yes, watch it.
